Silvius Brabo is a mythical Roman soldier who is said to have killed a giant, and by this would have created the name Brabant.
Later this story was also used to explain the name Antwerp (meaning hand throwing). Brabo once killed a giant, called Druon Antigoon, who asked money from people who wanted to pass by the river Scheldt. When they didn't want to pay, he cut of their hand and threw it in the river. Because of this Brabo also removed the hand of the giant, and threw it away.
This mythical story is still shown by the statue in front of the Antwerp City Hall.

You thought gardening is boring? You guessed wrong! Here are some of the most beautiful forms you can make. In these pics you will see that even some characters from ancient Indian stories can be shaped.
Hedges, both clipped and unclipped, are often used as ornament in the layout of gardens. Typical woody plants for clipped hedges include privet, hawthorn, beech, yew, leyland cypress, hemlock, arborvitae, barberry, box, holly, oleander, lavender, etc. An early 20th century fashion was for tapestry hedges, using a mix of golden, green and glaucous dwarf conifers, or beech and copper beech. Unclipped hedges take up more space, generally at a premium in modern gardens, but compensate by flowering. Rosa multiflora is widely used as a dense hedge along median (central) strips of dual-carriageway roads, such as parkways in the United States. In mild climates, more exotic flowering hedges are formed, using Ceanothus, Hibiscus or Camellia.

The winter is almost here and the most of us are happily expecting first snowflakes and the first. big, beautiful snowman. However, some people are too skilled to make a simple snowman and they decided to make a real pieces of art made of snow.
This art is called snow sculpture. It is comparable to sand or ice sculpture, it is practiced outdoors, and often in full view of spectators, thus giving it kinship to performance art in the eyes of some. The materials used for this tehnique are simple hand tools such as shovels, hatchets, and saws. Snow sculptures are usually carved out of a single block of snow about 6 to 15 feet on each side and weighing about 20 - 30 tons.
There are snow sculpture cnotests all around the world. Most famous ones are those in Quebec City, in Ottawa and in Perm, Russia.
There is also annual Winter Carnival at Michigan Technological University which has been a tradition since 1928. These sculptures are not carved from a single block, but rather many blocks made over a month.
Here are some most amazing snow sculptures we collected:
